On-site, Airport and Transportation planning of a greenfield airport
Airport: Kempegowda International Airport, India
Bangalore International Airport (BLR) is a greenfield airport. BLR has been renamed to Kempegowda International Airport (BLR). Having created my role, I lead, managed, delivered, and monitored projects on the landside, airside, and airspace as the airport progressed through design and phase for expansion, thus supporting airport development through engineering and management works.
Created my role by filling in the airport’s knowledge gap for Transportation systems.
Management:
Active presence in design discussions, project kick-off meetings, stakeholder management, contract review, staying up to date in knowledge of infrastructure development, maintaining regular communication with aerodrome operations and project personnel, and staying updated on status of multiple porjects.
Ensuring that the infrastructure projects and other developments remain aligned with the Masterplan.
Continuous communication in obtainin project clearances and approvals from external stakeholders throughout the expansion and design projects. These included Airports Authority of India personnel (AAI), Bangalore Police, the Border Security Force (BSF), and the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA).
Served as in-house consultant and support the Aerodrome Operations, Aerodrome Maintenance, the ARFF, Wildlife, Horticulture, Architects, Contracts, and Constructions teams on varied mix of both scheduled and ad hoc projects.
Runway utilization monthly statistics and monitoring.
Engineering work and Projects:
Updated the ICAO Annex14 surfaces model of the aerodrome. Developed documentation and obtained building heights clearances for infrastructure projects.
Monitoring infrastructure development plans, ensuring that invisible surfaces i.e., the ICAO Annex 14 surfaces, are not being infringed upon.
Based on ICAO SARPs determined the minimum vectoring altitude around BLR, optimized to increase airspace capacity in the vicinity of the aerodrome.
Rolled-in continuous market research on aviation, airport technologies, trends, and anticipated future airside regulations that could impact infrastructure, into projects, and project discussions.
Visibility analysis from ATCT for exisiting and porposed infrastructure.
Lead and managed Landside and Transportation projects, remaining responsible for maintaining uninterrupted landside traffic flow, through the Terminal T1 expansion works.
Conducted feasibility studies, wherein a big one was potential locations and configurations of a third runway, developing runway layouts accommodating expected flight operations, the pros, and cons, socio-economic impact analysis of each and thus the viability of each alternative.
Designed the arrivals and departures curbs, and downstream signalized intersection, ensuring peak flows without spillback.
For the opening day, of the expanded Terminal 1, developed the Traffic flows, and transportation staging plan. Followed-up with the Landside Operations on the performance of the Departures and Arrivals curb lengths each, to ensure that lengths accommodated the traffic for peak periods without spillovers or spillbacks from a traffic signal downstream.
Located, sized, and designed compliant ARFF and airside maintenance facilities supporting second runway.
Review of the design submissions submitted as part of international Architectural design competition submission for of Terminal 2 design.
Engineering and Operations design review of design submissions for Terminal 1 expansion, new Terminal 2, and airfield design for New South Parallel Runway RWY 09R-27L (second runway), proposed multi-modal transportation hub.
